Four stories about hopes and longings of yesterday and today
While travelling through Italy, a children's book illustrator called Romanova falls in love with Leonid, an ill-adjusted artist whom she finds so fascinating and enigmatic that she nicknames him Raskolnikov. Raskolnikov woos her and takes every opportunity to be alone with her. But his reasons are not what Romanova thinks they are, and the sentimental journey reaches an unexpected end. "Pantoffeltierchen" is the story of a woman whose whole life revolves around her husband, her children and her efforts to make a happy, comfortable home. Marianna is totally dedicated and believes that she is one of the few women to have a really happy marriage - until one day she accidentally overhears a telephone conversation between two strangers.

Pressestimmen
"Perhaps it is Tokarjeva's laconic, unsentimental tone, combined with her great sensitivity for visual and emotional detail, that make her stories so immediate and compelling." (Sender Freies Berlin)
"Viktorija Tokarjeva's stories are heart-rendingly beautiful and desperately sad. They are never kitschy or sentimental, and in spite of all their unvarnished truth about the spiritual brutalisation of our time, they are full of feeling and sympathy for their protagonists." (Radio Bremen)
