Osseointegration refers to the direct, functional, and structural attachment between vital bone and a load-bearing implant surface. Originating from Brånemark's seminal 1969 definition-which characterized it as a direct bone-to-implant interface devoid of intervening soft tissue-the concept has evolved to encompass clinical success. In 1986, the American Academy of Implant Dentistry refined this by emphasizing the firm, painless, and immobile fixation of an alloplastic material under functional loads. Expanding on this, Zarb and Albrektsson established that true clinical osseointegration is defined by long-term implant stability in the absence of pain, mobility, or peri-implant radiolucency.
