Artikelbeschreibung
Jean Bodin's 'Démonomanie des sorciers' (1580) discusses legal and theological positions on crimen magiae, recommends simplified proceedings and attacks the opponents of witch-hunting as well as attempts to legitimise 'magic'. The German translation by the studied lawyer Johann Fischart ('De Magorum Daemonomania', first 1581) supplements the text in many ways with references to German conditions. It is part of his demonological oeuvre, which also includes a new edition of the 'Hexenhammer'. This edition makes the text, which has been published in several versions, available for the first time in a critical form and offers a reliable textual basis for historical and literary studies.
