There is no Cheese in Africa is a personal story about travel, work, encounters, mistakes, and the slow dismantling of certainty.Christian Kaiser travels repeatedly to Africa, especially Cameroon, first out of curiosity and later with projects and business ideas in mind. Coffee, palm kernels, vehicles, tools, repairs, agriculture, energy, and technical solutions become part of his journeys. As a technician, he is used to asking practical questions: What works? What is broken? How can it be improved? But the longer he travels, the more another question becomes unavoidable: What might I still not understand? He rides motorcycles through Central Africa, stays with people he barely knows, buys coffee directly from farmers, repairs machines, argues about money, searches for cold beer, gets lost on roads that look much easier on the map, and repeatedly finds himself in situations where his own assumptions do not fit reality. Some encounters are funny. Others are frustrating, uncomfortable, or deeply personal. Again and again, Christian discovers that observing something is not the same as understanding it.The book also looks back at his own life in Germany: family, work, marriage, responsibility, failure, independence, and the question of what kind of life actually feels meaningful. His travels gradually become more than journeys across countries. They become a way of looking at himself. This is not a book that tries to explain "Africa". It does not claim to provide simple answers about development, culture, poverty, sustainability, or how people should live.Instead, it tells the story of one man who arrives with ideas in his head, tests them against reality, gets things wrong, changes his mind, and learns to look again. There is no Cheese in Africa is neither a conventional travelogue nor a story about a European going to Africa to help.It is a book about encounters and reflection.About the gap between intention and reality.About the things we believe we know. And about what can happen when we are willing to question them.
