The Argonautica

The Argonautica recounts Jason's quest for the Golden Fleece, from the assembling of the heroic crew aboard the Argo to the perilous voyage to Colchis and the unsettling triumph secured through Medea's passion and magic. Composed in learned Hellenistic Greek hexameters, the poem reworks Homeric epic with Alexandrian refinement: compressed narrative, geographical erudition, psychological subtlety, and a fascination with causation, ritual, and mythic variants.
