Peter Schlemihl

Adelbert von Chamisso's Peter Schlemihl is a compact masterpiece of German Romantic prose, at once fairy tale, moral parable, and uncanny social satire. Its hero exchanges his shadow for an inexhaustible purse, only to discover that wealth without visible human wholeness brings exile, suspicion, and shame. Written in a lucid, deceptively simple style, the tale belongs to the Romantic fascination with doubles, demonic bargains, and symbolic estrangement, while also anticipating modern meditations on identity, social legitimacy, and the cost of material desire. Chamisso's own life illuminates the story's peculiar poignancy. Born in France and displaced by the Revolution, he became a German writer while never wholly escaping the consciousness of exile. His later career as a naturalist and voyager also resonates with Schlemihl's final turn toward wandering, observation, and scientific detachment. The book's fantasy is therefore grounded in lived experience: the shadow becomes an image of belonging, citizenship, reputation, and the fragile signs by which society recognizes a person. Readers interested in Romantic literature, philosophical fiction, or the origins of the modern fantastic will find Peter Schlemihl indispensable. Brief yet richly suggestive, it rewards both first reading and close scholarly attention.
