The much-cited demographic change - that is, the growing proportion of older and very old people in our society - makes it important to 'examine the possibilities of healthy ageing and of being old' (Howe, 1993; Schreier & Bartholomeyczik, 2004). Arens-Azevedo & Behr-Völtzer emphasise that nutrition is 'of particular importance for maintaining health and quality of life well into old age' (Arens-Azevedo & Behr-Völtzer, 2002). This book aims, through a literature review of various databases and libraries, to identify the causes of nutritional problems in old age and the consequences these may have in terms of physical activity and mobility. It also examines what preventive measures are available and how these can be implemented.
