Kontroverstheologie im Kontext

They are considered merely 'the opponents': the princes, theologians and politicians who disagreed with Luther's theology and the Wittenberg Reformation. This book sheds light on key figures such as Duke George of Saxony, Hieronymus Emser, Hieronymus Dungersheim and Johannes Cochlaeus. Previous research has examined their politics and analysed their theological writings. In comparison, this book examines the prerequisites and contexts of anti-Reformation publishing. To what extent is it consistent with the theological debates of the late Middle Ages? What social contexts did Luther's opponents operate in, and what contacts did they sustain? What persuasive strategies did they employ in their texts and images to convey their theological positions?Adopting a theological and cultural-historical perspective, this study deepens our understanding of Catholic controversial theology, providing ecumenical theology with a tool to view the divisions that arose during the Reformation soberly and without awkward reservations.
