People Power

This book describes how individuals, networks, and groups in Eastern Europe worked patiently for 40 years to erode and finally overthrow, in the "velvet revolutions" of 1989, their discredited governments. They proved the effectiveness of social resistance, of "people power," and Michael Randle considers the significance of their success for European and international politics. Part 2 consists of his interviews with people who were directly involved in the everyday struggles for democracy, offering new information and personal insights into their motivations and actions.
