He first gained notoriety by exposing a band of counterfeiters in Illinois, and went on to work extensively for the railroads and other corporations providing security and detective services. He was instrumental in foiling an assassination attempt on Abraham Lincoln in Baltimore in 1861 as the new president traveled to Washington for his inauguration. During the Civil War Pinkerton created and directed the Union spy system.
