Mann was during his lifetime an acknowledged authority on applied science and agriculture in England, the Middle East and India, but it is less widely known that he was equally distinguished by his work in the social sciences. He not only pioneered modern-style village surveys in both England and India, but also modern style urban surveys and studies in India. There he broke new ground in his remarkable first-hand research on agricultural labour, village economics, depressed or "Untouchable" classes in town and country, and human and industrial relations in India's first steel town, Jamshedpur. This book reproduces thirty-five of Dr. Mann's papers-in whole, in part, or in summary.
