A Chemical Love Story

  • Englisch

Alexander (better known as “Sasha”) and Ann Shulgin’s foundational work in the genre was the first book to fully impart the how-to chemistry, and convey the effects, of many of the entheogenic drugs that are currently being studied and used to heal trauma and deal with death. An acronym for “Phenethylamines I Have Known and Loved”, the book spans autobiography, organic chemistry, politics, ethnobotany, and psychopharmacology, and the cultural impact is likely to be profound for decades to come, as it has already. PiHKAL is divided into two parts, the first of which is a fictionalized autobiographical 'novel' - the main fiction is that it is fiction. This first half of the book is The Love Story, about two people named Shura and Alice who fall in love, though one of them is already in love with someone else. This love triangle is a painful ordeal they must go through, and that process unfolds before the reader with grace and great insight into human nature. Shura is a brilliant chemist who has dedicated his career to making psychoactive drugs, in the story they go through many experiences with the psychedelic compounds that Shura has discovered and has made in his lab, all of which have been bioassayed himself. The reader will find themselves going on this journey with them, experiencing what they experienced, both in their hearts and in the psychedelic journeys they have. The second half of PiHKAL is called The Chemical Story, and it contains detailed instructions for, and effects of, the synthesis of 179 psychedelic phenethylamines, which were mostly discovered by Shulgin himself. For each substance there is information on its synthesis, suggested effective dosage, duration, and detailed commentary on the subjective effects that were experienced. This book appeals to adults of all ages and cultures, and to the psychedelically experienced and inexperienced alike.Show Additional Fields<BR>-

Holslag, Jonathan A Political History of the World
Three Thousand Years of War and Peace

  • Softcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9780241395561
  • Englisch
A three-thousand year history of the world that examines the causes of war and the search for peace<BR><BR>In three thousand years of history, China has spent at least eleven centuries at war. The Roman Empire was in conflict during at least 50 per cent of its lifetime. Since 1776, the United States has spent over one hundred years at war. The dream of peace has been universal in the history of humanity. So why have we so rarely been able to achieve it? <BR><BR>In A Political History of the World, Jonathan Holslag has produced a sweeping history of the world, from the Iron Age to the present, that investigates the causes of conflict between empires, nations and peoples and the attempts at diplomacy and cosmopolitanism. A birds-eye view of three thousand years of history, the book illuminates the forces shaping world politics from Ancient Egypt to the Han Dynasty, the Pax Romana to the rise of Islam, the Peace of Westphalia to the creation of the United Nations.<BR><BR>This truly global approach enables Holslag to search for patterns across different eras and regions, and explore larger questions about war, diplomacy, and power. Has trade fostered peace? What are the limits of diplomacy? How does environmental change affect stability? Is war a universal sin of power? At a time when the threat of nuclear war looms again, this is a much-needed history intended for students of international politics, and anyone looking for a background on current events.

More than an overview of the colorful sights and sounds, these easy-to-follow chapters paint a vivid picture of the psyche of a people who have been shaped by their geography and history, and who are notable for their warmth, outgoing nature, and zest for life. In this large, landlocked country named after the mighty Zambezi River, the "real Africa" of old mixes comfortably with the new. Mineral-rich, with vast untapped agricultural, water, energy, and human potential, Zambia sits on the investor's leader board for Africa. David Livingstone, the Victoria Falls, Lake Kariba--such magical names, together with the spectacular wealth of bird and wildlife make Zambia the upscale safari destination of choice. A nation made up of more than 70 ethnic groups, Zambia has moved through diverse tribal histories, European colonization, socialist philosophy and rhetoric, and, finally, a gung-ho charge into multiparty capitalism.

This thoroughly updated edition of Culture Smart! China puts these changes into historical context, explains deep-seated cultural attitudes, and guides you through the maze of unfamiliar social situations, in order to help you discover for yourself the pragmatism, genius, warmth, and humanity of this extraordinary country and its people.

Armitage, David; David, Armitage The Ideological Origins of the British Empire
  • Cambridge University Press, 2010
  • Softcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9780521789783
  • Englisch
The Ideological Origins of the British Empire presents a comprehensive history of British conceptions of empire for more than half a century. David Armitage traces the emergence of British imperial identity from the mid-sixteenth to the mid-eighteenth centuries, using a full range of manuscript and printed sources. By linking the histories of England, Scotland and Ireland with the history of the British Empire, he demonstrates the importance of ideology as an essential linking between the processes of state-formation and empire-building. This book sheds light on major British political thinkers, from Sir Thomas Smith to David Hume, by providing fascinating accounts of the 'British problem' in the early modern period, of the relationship between Protestantism and empire, of theories of property, liberty and political economy in imperial perspective, and of the imperial contribution to the emergence of British 'identities' in the Atlantic world.

An original and groundbreaking examination of the psychological devastation of war through the lens of Homer’s Iliad in this “compassionate book [that] deserves a place in the lasting literature of the Vietnam War” (The New York Times).<BR><BR>In this moving and dazzlingly creative book, Dr. Jonathan Shay examines the psychological devastation of war by comparing the soldiers of Homer’s Iliad with Vietnam veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. A classic of war literature that has as much relevance as ever in the wake of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Achilles in Vietnam is a “transcendent literary adventure” (The New York Times) and “clearly one of the most original and most important scholarly works to have emerged from the Vietnam War” (Tim O’Brien, author of The Things They Carried).<BR> <BR>As a Veterans Affairs psychiatrist, Shay encountered devastating stories of unhealed PTSD and uncovered the painful paradox—that fighting for one’s country can render one unfit to be a citizen. With a sensitive and compassionate examination of the battles many Vietnam veterans continue to fight, Shay offers readers a greater understanding of PTSD and how to alleviate the potential suffering of soldiers. Although the Iliad was written twenty-seven centuries ago, Shay shows how it has much to teach about combat trauma, as do the more recent, compelling voices and experiences of Vietnam vets.<BR> <BR>A groundbreaking and provocative monograph, Achilles in Vietnam takes readers on a literary journey that demonstrates how we can learn how war damages the mind and spirit, and work to change those things in our culture that so that we don’t continue repeating the same mistakes.

Regulation of African Trade
The Impact of the African Continental Free Trade Area

  • Hardcover

  • Englisch
  • Routledge Research in International Economic Law
In 2018, member states of the African Union signed the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA) to implement a single continental market for goods and services and establish a continental customs union. This book discusses regulatory developments across the African continent meant to accommodate and/or further drive economic realities on the ground. The focus here is on the trade in goods.Divided into two parts, the first presents the big picture of the current state of Africa's economic integration and AfCFTA's role in this process, including its history, policy objectives, legal architecture and economic as well as security foundations. Part II addresses the relationship between this new macro-regional trade agreement (RTA) and the WTO multilateral trading system in the era of the fragmentation and policentrisation of global economic governance. Balancing legal, economic and political drivers of and hindrances to trade flows, the work examines how added value can be created via increased regional economic integration while mitigating harm to the coherence of the existing multilateral and global trading system.Written by a combination of academics and practitioners, the work will be a valuable resource for those working in the areas of International Economic Law, International Trade Law, African Law and Development.

AI-Enabled Learning for Climate Action
Building Skills, Capacity and Collective Intelligence for a Warming World
  • Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2026
  • Softcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9781041040231
  • Englisch
AI-Enabled Learning for Climate Action brings together scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and innovators to examine how digital learning systems, data platforms, and emerging technologies-including artificial intelligence, digital twins, and immersive tools-can accelerate climate literacy, support green skills and jobs, strengthen institutional decision-making, and enable collective action. Rather than treating digital learning as a delivery mechanism alone, the contributors demonstrate how learning systems function as critical climate infrastructure by building the human and institutional capacities needed for adaptation, mitigation, and long-term resilience. The chapters span global, regional, and local contexts, with examples from low-, middle-, and high-income countries. They explore how AI-enabled and digital learning approaches can enhance climate awareness and behavior change; equip youth and professionals with future-ready and green skills; support evidence-based policymaking; and enable experiential, problem-based learning grounded in real-world data. Contributors also examine how technology-enabled learning can advance climate justice, strengthen governance, and promote transparency, public participation, and accountability.Blending conceptual frameworks with applied case studies, this volume offers both the what and the how of designing inclusive, scalable, and action-oriented climate learning ecosystems. It is intended for educators, policymakers, development practitioners, and institutions seeking practical guidance on how AI-enabled learning can help bridge the gap between climate knowledge, skills for the future of work, and meaningful action.

Kelegama, Thiruni Central Margins
Sri Lanka's Violent Frontier
  • Cambridge University Press, 2026
  • Softcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9781009757836
  • Englisch
Why do development projects so often fail to deliver progress, yet succeed in strengthening states? Central Margins answers this question by exposing the paradox at the heart of development: economic failure masking political success. Through vivid ethnography and deep archival research, the book shows how Sri Lanka's ambitious programmes - most notably the World Bank-funded Mahaweli Development Scheme - collapsed as projects of prosperity but triumphed as tools of militarisation, demographic engineering, and state consolidation. Introducing the concept of 'hidden state transcripts', it reveals how governments project images of benevolent development while embedding surveillance, displacement, and majoritarian nationalism in everyday life. By analysing state power from the contested margins of the Sinhala-Buddhist state, Central Margins demonstrates how postcolonial regimes weaponise development and environmental governance to remake sovereignty. This original account speaks not only to scholars of South Asia, but to anyone interested in how development reshapes power and politics across the Global South. This title is Open Access.

Halldorsson, Vidar How Digital Screen Use Alienates Human Societies

  • Classical and Contemporary Social Theory
Halldorsson's How Digital Screen Use Alienates Human Societies examines recent processes of technological rationalism, which were intensified by the Covid-pandemic, and explores how they alienate human societies in the name of progress. Challenging the prevailing assumptions of such 'progress', the book argues that these processes undermine the essential 'social magic' - the everyday human sociality that builds communities - which results in societal fragmentation, marked by alienation in the form of social isolation, consumption, polarisation, fear, and conflict. The paradox of how increased connectivity through digital networks, can lead to lack of human connection is the critical question this book pursues. It explores how intense processes of technological rationalisation has undermined human sociality and alienated the world by replacing human-to-human relationships with human-to-machine interactions. The author argues that communication with/through screen machines is incapable of replacing vital social relationships that breed 'social magic' and build communities. This disconnection, which is driven by technological capitalism, undermines human sociality and causes alienation. Ultimately, the book asserts that humanity needs more social magic, fostered through human-to-human relationships - and offers critical sociological analysis and potential remedies. This book is a critical academic treatise. It will be of interest to social science scholars and students as well as a broader audience seeking to resist the relentless makeover of human societies, in the name of technological rationalisation, and make the world more humane, meaningful, and magical.

'One of the most original and important books on Africa in years' FINANCIAL TIMES'A compelling case for the continent's potential' Bill GatesThe birth of new nations, independent democracies, the unprecedented growth of cities from Lagos to Cairo; the African continent is booming. So why do myths about underdevelopment, unproductive land and overpopulation remain? In a groundbreaking new study of Africa's developmental history, economist Joe Studwell debunks long-held views about the continent's presumed resistance to growth, charting monumental changes in government, demography and asset management. Considering everything from settler colonialism to soil conditions, mineral extractivism to disease development and eradication, Studwell persuasively argues that the seizing back of land, people and states across Africa, has also been the seizure of mass economic development. From slavery to independence and beyond, this is the definitive account of the world's second largest continent - and an optimistic look to its future.

The final book in a series of five titles which graphically cover each year of the war. Countless thousands of pictures were taken by photographers on all sides during the First World War. The Great War Illustrated series, beginning with the year 1914, includes in its pages many rarely seen images with individual numbers allocated, and subsequently they will be lodged with the Taylor Library Archive for use by editors and authors.

While some of the images in The Great War Illustrated 1918 will be familiar, many will be seen for the first time by a new generation interested in the months that changed the world for ever.

This volume uses classical liberal thought to present new theoretical and empirical perspectives on freedom of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals and communities.Rainbow Liberty emphasizes the institutions that sustain tolerance, pluralism, and freedom of association, which empower marginalized communities to build civil associations in the face of social and political pressures. Classical liberal methodological and normative studies on LGBTQ life have been conspicuously absent in scholarly literature but are applied in this volume to explore the circumstances and implications of queer agency and freedom. The ideas of Adam Smith, F. A. Hayek, James M. Buchanan, and Vincent and Elinor Ostrom, among other thinkers in the classical liberal tradition, give a unique and underappreciated perspective on LGBTQ issues. This volume is an invaluable resource for scholars exploring sexuality and gender from a variety of disciplines, including economics, political science, philosophy, sociology, and related fields. She presents results from research on young people in Henan Province, China. By constructing a mediation model grounded in stress-sensitivity theory, reinforcement sensitivity theory, and attachment theory, the book uncovers how stress and psychological vulnerabilities interact to intensify reliance on digital platforms. The book integrates theoretical frameworks with recent empirical data to offer a comprehensive understanding of SNS addiction. It provides valuable insights for scholars and mental health professionals, emphasizing the mediating role of perceived stress and the heightened vulnerability of individuals with insecure attachment styles. Beyond theoretical contributions, the book offers practical strategies for educators, counsellors, and parents to address the growing challenges of SNS addiction among young adults. Its findings are timely, addressing a global issue exacerbated by recent social and economic upheavals. Its detailed analysis of psychological theories and quantitative methods makes it particularly valuable for those investigating the intersection of mental health and digital behaviour. The book caters to an academic audience, including researchers, graduate students, and scholars in psychology, sociology, and digital media studies. Mental health practitioners and educators will also benefit from its evidence-based strategies. It is an indispensable resource for anyone seeking to understand or mitigate the psychological impact of SNS addiction on contemporary youth.

Exploring Ecological Issues in Graphic Narratives

  • Global Perspectives in Comics Studies
Exploring Ecological Issues in Graphic Narratives positions graphic storytelling at the intersection of ecocriticism, environmental justice, and Comics Studies. This volume argues that ecological catastrophe is not only a scientific or policy crisis but also a crisis of representation, set against the backdrop of climate change, biodiversity loss, and systemic environmental inequity. While ecocriticism has expanded significantly, this volume largely focuses largely on canonical prose, overlooking the multimodal and spatial possibilities of graphic narratives. It critically engages with the Anthropocene, highlighting the deep connections between environmental degradation and colonialism, capitalism, caste oppression, and gendered exploitation. Through global case studies-including Indigenous resistance in Canada's oil sands, Dalit environmental aesthetics in India, Japanese eco-dystopian manga, and urban human-animal reconfigurations-it explores how graphic narratives depict "slow violence," express nonhuman agency, and challenge anthropocentric binaries.Part of the Global Perspectives in Comics Studies series, this volume addresses the multilingual dimensions of the comics medium, often overlooked in ecocriticism, making it a valuable resource for scholars and enthusiasts alike. With its international scope, it will appeal to academics, students, activists, artists, educators, policy makers, and graphic novel enthusiasts exploring ecological issues, environmental justice, and the interdisciplinary potential of graphic narratives, particularly in regions where comics and graphic novels thrive.

Family and Educational Inequality in China
Evidence from the China Family Panel Studies
  • Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2026
  • Hardcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9781041316183
  • Englisch
  • Routledge
This book offers an in-depth examination of how family background shapes inequalities in children's academic performance and cognitive skill development in China. It further identifies key mediating mechanisms-including living arrangements, family investments, parenting practices, and private tutoring-that help explain how these disparities emerge and persist. While repeated cross-sectional data are valuable for examining macro-level social changes over time, they are inherently limited in their ability to capture individual-level dynamics and identify underlying causal mechanisms. To overcome these limitations, sociologists of China have increasingly turned to the rich, high-quality longitudinal data provided by the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), launched in 2010, to investigate social and economic inequality across multiple levels and domains. The essays in this volume draw exclusively on CFPS data and collectively examine how families shape children's educational attainment, highlighting a range of intervening pathways. Together, these studies provide a coherent and empirically rigorous understanding of the mechanisms through which family background contributes to educational inequality in contemporary China. This book will be an important resource for researchers and academics of Chinese sociology and demography. The articles were originally published in various issues of Chinese Sociological Review.

Celebrity Crises and Conflicts
Exploring Scandal, Failure and Misconduct
  • Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2026
  • Hardcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9781041371465
  • Englisch
Fame is fickle, as conventional wisdom has it, but in current times, celebrity seems to be in crisis more than ever. Sexual abuse scandals and the #MeToo movement have rocked the foundations of celebrity culture; media and AI developments have questioned the nature of the 'star' as a human figure; various forms of societal, cultural, and political polarisation have put celebrities under increased public pressure; and more and more famous figures are opening up about their mental health crises and the negative effects of fame, such as burnout, anxiety, the impact of hate speech, body-shaming, or performance pressure. This edited collection explores how such moments of crisis-scandals, reputational breakdowns, public controversies, and conflicts-shape the contemporary dynamics of celebrity culture. Bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives from media studies, cultural studies, and sociology, the contributions examine a wide range of cases, from high-profile public scandals to the affective politics of celebrity failure and reputational repair. This book highlights how celebrity figures become focal points for broader social debates about gender, class, race, morality, and authenticity, offering critical insights into the mechanisms of fame, the politics of visibility, and the cultural work performed by celebrity scandals in the digital age. This volume will be of great interest to postgraduate students, researchers, and academics in media and cultural studies, sociology, communication studies, and celebrity studies as well as anyone interested in understanding the complex relationship between fame, power, and contemporary culture. It was originally published as a special issue of Celebrity Studies.

A fearlessly feminist philosophical approach to defying diet culture, cultivating radical self-care, and rediscovering empowered embodiment<BR> <BR>Informed by personal narrative, cultural studies, and the work of luminaries from Simone de Beauvoir and Mary Wollstonecraft to Audre Lorde and Roxane Gay<BR><BR>In this timely and unflinching manifesto, Dr. Celine Leboeuf unpacks the philosophical and oppressive systems that sustain our cultural obsession with being thin—why it’s framed as something to “achieve,” how it’s predicated on exclusion, and that the goalposts are racist and misogynistic—and always moving.<BR><BR>Drawing on memoir, feminist theory, and cultural analysis, The Tyranny of Thinness is a wide-ranging and erudite treatise on how the skinny ideal shapes our earliest memories and experiences—and steals joy, agency, and self-determination from our adolescences, our social identities, our ambitions, and even our sense of moral worth.<BR><BR>- Part 1 traces the origins of fatphobia in anti-Black racism, unpacking how thinness is a carefully constructed ideal. Dr. Céline Leboeuf shows how self-objectification is instilled in young girls and diverted toward activities that enforce objectification. <BR>- Part 2 offers a path forward. Through embodied practices like intuitive eating, joyful movement, sensual awareness, community care, and the philosophical exercise of world-remaking, The Tyranny of Thinness outlines a new way of living in one's body that is compassionate, realistic, and self-empowering.<BR><BR><BR>From the resurrection of heroin chic and thinspo to the rise of #SkinnyTok and Ozempic, Dr. Leboeuf exposes how thinness becomes a political weapon—and shows how the body positivity movement has been coopted and repackaged. This book is an elevated must-read for anyone struggling with body image—and every reader searching to understand what the culture dictates about beauty and perceived worth.

Cox, Daniel Generation Uncoupled
America's New Gender Divide and the Crisis of Human Connection
  • Potter/Ten Speed/Harmony/Rodale, 2026
  • Hardcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9780593603437
  • Englisch
A sweeping and empathetic portrait of the new gender divide, from a top pollster and cultural commentator, with key insights into what the gap means for the future of romantic relationships, family life, and America’s civic project<BR><BR>In Generation Uncoupled, a leading researcher on American public life investigates the causes and consequences of the rising hostility between young men and women. Drawing on original polling research, over one hundred hours of interviews and focus groups, and conversations with experts, Daniel Cox traces how Gen Z is being driven apart by a culture that fosters fear, resentment and insecurity. What emerges is a portrait of a generation caught between new social technologies, the collapse of civic and social spaces, and a deepening sense of mistrust.<BR><BR>Through personal narratives and startling polling trends, Cox explores not only the complexities of modern dating and evolving attitudes about sex, but the deeper cultural forces redefining social life. He reveals how immersive digital experiences, polarized and personalized politics, and curated childhoods have created a preoccupation with individuality, a preference for social avoidance and a diminished sense of obligation. Along the way, we meet the young people behind the statistics: anxious, guarded, and uncertain.<BR><BR>But this isn’t a story of what’s broken or who’s to blame. It’s a call for a cultural reset; a reimagining of our social and civic priorities. With rigor, compassion, and a refusal to take sides, Generation Uncoupled challenges cultural orthodoxies and media narratives alike. If we want to rebuild trust, we must first recognize that we need each other. This is the definitive book for anyone trying to understand how we’ve veered so far off course and how we come together to fix it.

  • Critical South
In this book, the leading Brazilian cultural theorist Flora Süssekind analyzes the turbulent recent history of Brazil. She examines the protests which erupted in Brazil in 2013 and the ways in which these were appropriated by the extreme right, and she shows how these developments expressed a break from and threat to the democratic orientation and social pact represented by the 1988 Constitution, a collective achievement after decades of dictatorship. She also shows how these events contributed and pointed to the rise of a culture of intolerance, bringing this to bear upon literary and artistic production.

Süssekind's original concept of the chorus, understood not simply as a musical or theatrical category but as a structural force in culture, enables her to highlight the critical potential of cultural production and its power to redirect the course of events. She argues that it was during Brazil's recent history that the choral inflection emerged as a structuring force in culture. By documenting the dramatic shift in literary and artistic production from 2013 to the present day, Süssekind presents a sophisticated cartography for understanding literary and artistic production within a culture of dissent.

This innovative book will be of value to anyone interested in Latin American studies, literary and cultural studies, and the history and politics of Brazil.

  • Gender and Culture
Why do the most powerful men in the West wear sober, understated attire? Until the "Great Masculine Renunciation" in the eighteenth century, luxurious and often flamboyant clothing signaled social superiority for men as well as women.

Margaret Waller's fresh account of this historic recalibration of gender and class centers on an unlikely pair: Napoleon Bonaparte, the Corsican upstart who crowned himself emperor of France, and Pierre Antoine Le Boux La Mésangère, the defrocked priest who became Europe's premier fashion editor. Looking at knee breeches, schoolboy and officer uniforms, priests' robes, and imperial regalia, this book shows how misogyny and homophobia helped make Bonaparte, La Mésangère, and their peers men.

Napoleon's Closet shows when male fashion editors first associated women with fashion and urged men to renounce "feminine" frivolity in their dress. It connects French revolutionaries' masculinist construction of citizenship to the Church's long-standing requirement that its rank and file wear plain, modest clothing. It demonstrates that although Napoleon's reinstitution of sumptuous uniforms for men might seem the exception, he reserved for himself the modern male privilege of dressing down.

A lively and unorthodox exploration of the paradoxical history of male clothing, this book unveils the origins of modern ideas about normative masculinity, queerness, and "the closet."
