A Chemical Love Story

  • Englisch

Alexander (better known as “Sasha”) and Ann Shulgin’s foundational work in the genre was the first book to fully impart the how-to chemistry, and convey the effects, of many of the entheogenic drugs that are currently being studied and used to heal trauma and deal with death. An acronym for “Phenethylamines I Have Known and Loved”, the book spans autobiography, organic chemistry, politics, ethnobotany, and psychopharmacology, and the cultural impact is likely to be profound for decades to come, as it has already. PiHKAL is divided into two parts, the first of which is a fictionalized autobiographical 'novel' - the main fiction is that it is fiction. This first half of the book is The Love Story, about two people named Shura and Alice who fall in love, though one of them is already in love with someone else. This love triangle is a painful ordeal they must go through, and that process unfolds before the reader with grace and great insight into human nature. Shura is a brilliant chemist who has dedicated his career to making psychoactive drugs, in the story they go through many experiences with the psychedelic compounds that Shura has discovered and has made in his lab, all of which have been bioassayed himself. The reader will find themselves going on this journey with them, experiencing what they experienced, both in their hearts and in the psychedelic journeys they have. The second half of PiHKAL is called The Chemical Story, and it contains detailed instructions for, and effects of, the synthesis of 179 psychedelic phenethylamines, which were mostly discovered by Shulgin himself. For each substance there is information on its synthesis, suggested effective dosage, duration, and detailed commentary on the subjective effects that were experienced. This book appeals to adults of all ages and cultures, and to the psychedelically experienced and inexperienced alike.Show Additional Fields<BR>-

Holslag, Jonathan A Political History of the World
Three Thousand Years of War and Peace

  • Softcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9780241395561
  • Englisch
A three-thousand year history of the world that examines the causes of war and the search for peace<BR><BR>In three thousand years of history, China has spent at least eleven centuries at war. The Roman Empire was in conflict during at least 50 per cent of its lifetime. Since 1776, the United States has spent over one hundred years at war. The dream of peace has been universal in the history of humanity. So why have we so rarely been able to achieve it? <BR><BR>In A Political History of the World, Jonathan Holslag has produced a sweeping history of the world, from the Iron Age to the present, that investigates the causes of conflict between empires, nations and peoples and the attempts at diplomacy and cosmopolitanism. A birds-eye view of three thousand years of history, the book illuminates the forces shaping world politics from Ancient Egypt to the Han Dynasty, the Pax Romana to the rise of Islam, the Peace of Westphalia to the creation of the United Nations.<BR><BR>This truly global approach enables Holslag to search for patterns across different eras and regions, and explore larger questions about war, diplomacy, and power. Has trade fostered peace? What are the limits of diplomacy? How does environmental change affect stability? Is war a universal sin of power? At a time when the threat of nuclear war looms again, this is a much-needed history intended for students of international politics, and anyone looking for a background on current events.

More than an overview of the colorful sights and sounds, these easy-to-follow chapters paint a vivid picture of the psyche of a people who have been shaped by their geography and history, and who are notable for their warmth, outgoing nature, and zest for life. In this large, landlocked country named after the mighty Zambezi River, the "real Africa" of old mixes comfortably with the new. Mineral-rich, with vast untapped agricultural, water, energy, and human potential, Zambia sits on the investor's leader board for Africa. David Livingstone, the Victoria Falls, Lake Kariba--such magical names, together with the spectacular wealth of bird and wildlife make Zambia the upscale safari destination of choice. A nation made up of more than 70 ethnic groups, Zambia has moved through diverse tribal histories, European colonization, socialist philosophy and rhetoric, and, finally, a gung-ho charge into multiparty capitalism.

This thoroughly updated edition of Culture Smart! China puts these changes into historical context, explains deep-seated cultural attitudes, and guides you through the maze of unfamiliar social situations, in order to help you discover for yourself the pragmatism, genius, warmth, and humanity of this extraordinary country and its people.

Armitage, David; David, Armitage The Ideological Origins of the British Empire
  • Cambridge University Press, 2010
  • Softcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9780521789783
  • Englisch
The Ideological Origins of the British Empire presents a comprehensive history of British conceptions of empire for more than half a century. David Armitage traces the emergence of British imperial identity from the mid-sixteenth to the mid-eighteenth centuries, using a full range of manuscript and printed sources. By linking the histories of England, Scotland and Ireland with the history of the British Empire, he demonstrates the importance of ideology as an essential linking between the processes of state-formation and empire-building. This book sheds light on major British political thinkers, from Sir Thomas Smith to David Hume, by providing fascinating accounts of the 'British problem' in the early modern period, of the relationship between Protestantism and empire, of theories of property, liberty and political economy in imperial perspective, and of the imperial contribution to the emergence of British 'identities' in the Atlantic world.

An original and groundbreaking examination of the psychological devastation of war through the lens of Homer’s Iliad in this “compassionate book [that] deserves a place in the lasting literature of the Vietnam War” (The New York Times).<BR><BR>In this moving and dazzlingly creative book, Dr. Jonathan Shay examines the psychological devastation of war by comparing the soldiers of Homer’s Iliad with Vietnam veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. A classic of war literature that has as much relevance as ever in the wake of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Achilles in Vietnam is a “transcendent literary adventure” (The New York Times) and “clearly one of the most original and most important scholarly works to have emerged from the Vietnam War” (Tim O’Brien, author of The Things They Carried).<BR> <BR>As a Veterans Affairs psychiatrist, Shay encountered devastating stories of unhealed PTSD and uncovered the painful paradox—that fighting for one’s country can render one unfit to be a citizen. With a sensitive and compassionate examination of the battles many Vietnam veterans continue to fight, Shay offers readers a greater understanding of PTSD and how to alleviate the potential suffering of soldiers. Although the Iliad was written twenty-seven centuries ago, Shay shows how it has much to teach about combat trauma, as do the more recent, compelling voices and experiences of Vietnam vets.<BR> <BR>A groundbreaking and provocative monograph, Achilles in Vietnam takes readers on a literary journey that demonstrates how we can learn how war damages the mind and spirit, and work to change those things in our culture that so that we don’t continue repeating the same mistakes.

Regulation of African Trade
The Impact of the African Continental Free Trade Area

  • Englisch
  • Routledge Research in International Economic Law
In 2018, member states of the African Union signed the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA) to implement a single continental market for goods and services and establish a continental customs union. This book discusses regulatory developments across the African continent meant to accommodate and/or further drive economic realities on the ground. The focus here is on the trade in goods.Divided into two parts, the first presents the big picture of the current state of Africa's economic integration and AfCFTA's role in this process, including its history, policy objectives, legal architecture and economic as well as security foundations. Part II addresses the relationship between this new macro-regional trade agreement (RTA) and the WTO multilateral trading system in the era of the fragmentation and policentrisation of global economic governance. Balancing legal, economic and political drivers of and hindrances to trade flows, the work examines how added value can be created via increased regional economic integration while mitigating harm to the coherence of the existing multilateral and global trading system.Written by a combination of academics and practitioners, the work will be a valuable resource for those working in the areas of International Economic Law, International Trade Law, African Law and Development.

AI-Enabled Learning for Climate Action
Building Skills, Capacity and Collective Intelligence for a Warming World
  • Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2026
  • Softcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9781041040231
  • Englisch
AI-Enabled Learning for Climate Action brings together scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and innovators to examine how digital learning systems, data platforms, and emerging technologies-including artificial intelligence, digital twins, and immersive tools-can accelerate climate literacy, support green skills and jobs, strengthen institutional decision-making, and enable collective action. Rather than treating digital learning as a delivery mechanism alone, the contributors demonstrate how learning systems function as critical climate infrastructure by building the human and institutional capacities needed for adaptation, mitigation, and long-term resilience. The chapters span global, regional, and local contexts, with examples from low-, middle-, and high-income countries. They explore how AI-enabled and digital learning approaches can enhance climate awareness and behavior change; equip youth and professionals with future-ready and green skills; support evidence-based policymaking; and enable experiential, problem-based learning grounded in real-world data. Contributors also examine how technology-enabled learning can advance climate justice, strengthen governance, and promote transparency, public participation, and accountability.Blending conceptual frameworks with applied case studies, this volume offers both the what and the how of designing inclusive, scalable, and action-oriented climate learning ecosystems. It is intended for educators, policymakers, development practitioners, and institutions seeking practical guidance on how AI-enabled learning can help bridge the gap between climate knowledge, skills for the future of work, and meaningful action.

America's New Gender Divide and the Crisis of Human Connection
  • Potter/Ten Speed/Harmony/Rodale, 2026
  • Hardcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9780593603437
  • Englisch
A sweeping and empathetic portrait of the new gender divide, from a top pollster and cultural commentator, with key insights into what the gap means for the future of romantic relationships, family life, and America’s civic project<BR><BR>In Generation Uncoupled, a leading researcher on American public life investigates the causes and consequences of the rising hostility between young men and women. Drawing on original polling research, over one hundred hours of interviews and focus groups, and conversations with experts, Daniel Cox traces how Gen Z is being driven apart by a culture that fosters fear, resentment and insecurity. What emerges is a portrait of a generation caught between new social technologies, the collapse of civic and social spaces, and a deepening sense of mistrust.<BR><BR>Through personal narratives and startling polling trends, Cox explores not only the complexities of modern dating and evolving attitudes about sex, but the deeper cultural forces redefining social life. He reveals how immersive digital experiences, polarized and personalized politics, and curated childhoods have created a preoccupation with individuality, a preference for social avoidance and a diminished sense of obligation. Along the way, we meet the young people behind the statistics: anxious, guarded, and uncertain.<BR><BR>But this isn’t a story of what’s broken or who’s to blame. It’s a call for a cultural reset; a reimagining of our social and civic priorities. With rigor, compassion, and a refusal to take sides, Generation Uncoupled challenges cultural orthodoxies and media narratives alike. If we want to rebuild trust, we must first recognize that we need each other. This is the definitive book for anyone trying to understand how we’ve veered so far off course and how we come together to fix it.

Culture and Politics in Brazil, 2013 - 2023

  • Critical South
In this book, the leading Brazilian cultural theorist Flora Süssekind analyzes the turbulent recent history of Brazil. She examines the protests which erupted in Brazil in 2013 and the ways in which these were appropriated by the extreme right, and she shows how these developments expressed a break from and threat to the democratic orientation and social pact represented by the 1988 Constitution, a collective achievement after decades of dictatorship. She also shows how these events contributed and pointed to the rise of a culture of intolerance, bringing this to bear upon literary and artistic production.

Süssekind's original concept of the chorus, understood not simply as a musical or theatrical category but as a structural force in culture, enables her to highlight the critical potential of cultural production and its power to redirect the course of events. She argues that it was during Brazil's recent history that the choral inflection emerged as a structuring force in culture. By documenting the dramatic shift in literary and artistic production from 2013 to the present day, Süssekind presents a sophisticated cartography for understanding literary and artistic production within a culture of dissent.

This innovative book will be of value to anyone interested in Latin American studies, literary and cultural studies, and the history and politics of Brazil.

  • 2nd edition
Understanding the deepest issues in the philosophy of social science means understanding the personal and cultural biases social scientists cannot help but bring to their research.<BR><BR>This introduction is essential for students of philosophy and the social sciences, who are interested in the foundations of their disciplines. It focuses on conceptual and methodological questions in a way that identifies the often unexamined assumptions underlying the practice of social science.<BR><BR>These personal and cultural biases are critically analyzed along with the key ways they shape research and the interpretation of findings in different disciplines including psychology, the behavioural sciences and economics. <BR><BR>Chapters are thoroughly updated and do not presume a substantial background in philosophy. They cover new topics including:<BR>
Problems in the collection and sorting of data, free will-determinism dilemmas and scientific explanations in social science<BR>
Questions raised by post-truth "positional" epistemologies of the social, led by feminist and race-oriented studies<BR>
Disguised ideologies including white superiority- the systematic assumption that white people matter more than non-whites and the parallel ideology that men and their contributions to society are more valuable than women.<BR><BR>What makes this introduction unique is the emphasis throughout on how cultural ideals remain hidden away in social-science research, yet colour every aspect of social inquiry: material rarely discussed in the philosophical and professional literature on social science.

Couldry, Nick Predatory AI
How We Can Resist Corporate Captureof the Human Mind
  • Polity Press, 2026
  • Softcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9781509554706
  • Englisch
We are told that AI is inevitable, a revolutionary next stage in planetary intelligence. The calculative power that Big Tech is harnessing via its AI products cannot be doubted. But what if humanity is entering into the wrong social contract with AI?

A good future for humanity cannot mean inputting our lives into predatory AI models whose terms we don't control. It cannot mean trading away our own cognitive resources - and the power to define the future direction of the human mind - to corporations. It cannot mean ever greater cognitive dependence on business products, while ignoring the implications for environmental sustainability.

A good future with AI must mean putting social, community and planetary values first. This book imagines a different social contract with AI, and a different future. It presents clearly the social damage currently being done at work, and particularly the education and creative sectors, by accepting the wrong social contract with AI. And it debunks the philosophical prejudices that block us from valuing our own human cognitive resources.

In this second book of his trilogy, Humanising the Future, Nick Couldry argues that the time to renegotiate our contract with AI is now. This book opens a path to doing so.

Toward a deeper understanding of minds, whether natural or artificial, and of how they are studied and built across AI, AGI, and cognitive science.<BR><BR>Minds are functional entities that enable intelligent behavior. In On Minds, Paul Rosenbloom offers reflections and perspectives on the study of minds arising from a multi-decade career focused largely on cognitive architectures—hypotheses concerning the fixed structures and processes that yield a mind, whether natural or artificial. Cognitive architectures must be integrative in accommodating the full range of capabilities required of a mind. They must also be general, in applying across many, if not all, problems and domains. This breadth of investigation, across a sequence of three such architectures—XAPS, Soar, and Sigma—and over many years, has inspired a set of reflections on both cognitive architectures and three core disciplines within which such work occurs—artificial intelligence (AI), artificial general intelligence (AGI), and cognitive science.<BR><BR>The book’s reflections are of three types. The first explores four concepts critical to understanding minds—architectures, symbols, intelligence, and theories—to provide new perspectives and insights on them. The second rethinks the structure of the space of technologies that underlies work on minds, yielding multidimensional maps that clarify their similarities and differences plus detailed insights into the tradeoffs that exist across both individual technologies and integrated systems—whether symbolic, neural, or hybrid—built from them. The third traces the author’s decades of work on architectures—including cognitive architectures, the Common Model of Cognition, and the nature and structure of computing as a great scientific domain—interwoven with personal reflections and anecdotes.

  • New Horizons in Forensic Science

This contributed volume focuses on the scientific analysis of human speech and voice for identifying individuals in criminal investigations. This book explores the conceptual and methodological framework of forensic speaker identification, integrating elements of phonetics, linguistics, and acoustic analysis. It provides insights into objective speech parameters used in speaker profiling, voice mapping, and authentication.

With the growing use of mobile communication and the increasing number of voice-based crimes such as kidnapping, ransom, extortion, and terrorism, speech evidence has become critical. Traditional tape-based methods posed limitations such as background noise and data tampering. Advancements in speech science, acoustics, forensic phonetics, and computer algorithms have led to reliable software tools for speaker identification. This book outlines the theoretical principles, interdisciplinary approaches, and practical techniques, including real case studies, that demonstrate the efficacy of forensic speech analysis as credible, court-admissible evidence.

This book is valuable for students pursuing forensic science at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as law enforcement professionals, legal practitioners, and speech scientists involved in criminal investigations.

When her teacher, Mr Lightning Strikes, asks her to imagine a single New Years moment the whole world could share Ida's answer is simple: people put down their phones and look up. This lyrical, gentle philosophical picture book celebrates imagination and joy found in shared moments. It invites children (and adults) to slow down and reconnect with the world.

Egerdie, Jennie Frog and Toad Make History [A Parody]
Friends Doing Their Best Through the Ages
  • Running Press,U.S., 2026
  • Hardcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9798894143743
  • Englisch
Friendship is timeless, as Frog and Toad prove in this parody that invites readers to follow along and laugh as these classic characters are reimagined throughout world history from the author of Frog and Toad Are Doing Their Best. With tender-hearted humor, author Jennie Egerdie transports us away from the chaotic present day with her latest parody, Frog and Toad Make History. She channels charms of Arnold Lobel's iconic duo as she posits how they'd react to moments throughout history, starting as cave amphibians and continuing through ancient Greece, the Middle Ages, the Industrial Revolution, and more. Together, they arrive just a little too late to take in the sights of the Roman Empire. And of course Toad of panics during the Salem Witch Trials, spotting witchcraft everywhere. When newfangled telephones arrive on the scene, Frog can't help but think he's doing a great service to his friend by having one installed in Toad's home. Through these stories, it becomes clear that though the past may have been simpler times, they were no less chaotic. The key to getting by is approaching each new day with warmth, kindness, just a little bit of silliness, and-of course-having a best friend at your side.

Kandasamy, Niro Refugee Memory As Resistance
The Making of Tamil History
  • Melbourne University Press, 2026
  • Softcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9780522881219
  • Englisch
Refugee Memory as Resistance tells the powerful story of Tamils who fled the Sri Lankan civil war in the 1980s and 1990s and rebuilt their lives in new countries, including Australia.

Drawing on oral history interviews and archival research across Australia, the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka, the book explores how war, displacement and resettlement are lived and remembered across generations and borders.

What happens when people carry stories that states have tried to erase, silence and distort? The voices of Tamil refugees reveal how persecution, loss, belonging and survival shape personal identity and collective history. Author Niro Kandasamy travels the long roots of Tamil marginalisation in Sri Lanka, while also showing how refugees encounter new forms of exclusion from the places in which they sought safety.

The book offers an urgent account of how memory becomes a form of resistance, of how remembering is not only an act of reflection but a way for refugees to preserve culture and dignity, forge belonging and challenge the political forces that seek to redefine them.

Refugee Memory as Resistance highlights the power of storytelling to reclaim what history has tried to silence.

Whelan, Andrew Destruction of Documents
Erasure and Accountability in the Administrative State

How deleted or destroyed paperwork impacts organizational capacity and memory—and allows power to evade accountability.<BR><BR>Administrative documents mediate bureaucracies and trust in them, making organizational life possible. In Destruction of Documents, Andrew Whelan argues that the politics of paperwork are most explicit when the paper trail is deleted, burned, shredded or otherwise done away with.<BR><BR>Exploring how irreconcilable administrative ideals have been understood across historical and cultural contexts, the author shows that the destruction of administrative documents both legitimates and conceals the organized irresponsibility of bureaucratic power.<BR><BR>From radical calls for liberation through burning the files to demands for their salvage in the service of justice, the book presents an analysis across four case studies: the Nechaev affair, an 1870s controversy concerning Russian revolutionaries; the shredding of files in the US Embassy in Tehran in 1979; the “right to be forgotten” in the contemporary data economy; and the 2018 scheduling of environmental records at the US National Archives. Across the case studies, the author describes how political power escapes accountability, and thereby secures continuity, by exceeding the material constraints of the media through which it operates. The destruction of bureaucratic media is thus central to how administrative authority is legitimated: renewing a tacit social contract while deferring its fulfillment.

Mollers, Norma Tamaria Against Bias
How Computing Cultures Manufacture Disengagement

A rare look into the making of algorithmic surveillance—and how algorithmic harm happens.<BR><BR>How do computer scientists negotiate the thorny political issues their work is involved in—such as state violence, racial profiling, or the deskilling of labor—when they make surveillance technology? Examining how disciplinary conventions and larger social forces shape how computer scientists think, Against Bias by Norma Möllers diagnoses a deeply rooted culture of disengagement in computer science, one that discourages computer scientists from speaking and thinking politically about their work, or considering how their technologies aid larger systems of oppression or human destruction.<BR><BR>The author explores how and why, sometimes despite the best intentions, questions of justice, ethics, and democracy can disappear from the process of making algorithmic technologies, and what that has to do with the disciplinary cultures in which computer scientists are embedded. Speaking to broader debates on AI and social justice, this book makes the case for an “impure” computer science that doesn’t pretend to be neutral but teaches its students (how) to do no harm.

  • The Psychology of Everything
What is gender? How much is rooted in biology, and how much is learned? How does gender shape our identities, relationships, health, opportunities, and sense of belonging? The revised edition of The Psychology of Gender explores one of the most complex and contested subjects of our time. Drawing on psychology, biology, history, and the wider social sciences, it examines how gender is learned, lived, negotiated, and understood. From sex differences and gender stereotypes to health, wellbeing, and identity, the book explores the stories we inherit about masculinity and femininity and how they shape everyday life. More than this, it uses gender as a case study to explore the human urge to divide the world into 'us' and 'them'.Accessible, thought-provoking, and rich in storytelling, The Psychology of Gender challenges us to think beyond stereotypes, tolerate ambiguity, embrace curiosity, and see gender as a shared human project rather than a tribal battleground.

Ecofeminism: The Basics introduces the ecofeminist approaches to understanding how humans interact with, dominate and are embedded within the natural environment, of which we are a part.Tracing ecofeminism from Françoise d'Eaubonne's coining of the term in Feminism or Death through to the mid-2020s, the book examines its theoretical debates, activist practices and creative expressions, including its near collapse at the turn of the twenty-first century and subsequent renewal. Drozdowski, Krzysztof The Last Secrets of the Nazis
  • Pen & Sword Books Ltd, 2026
  • Hardcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9781036182380
  • Englisch
A documentary-style investigation reveals how post-war impunity and escape networks shaped enduring myths about Nazi crimes.

The Last Secrets of the Nazis is a documentary-style investigation into the most sensational, disputed, and mythologised aspects of the history of the Third Reich - from the corridors of power and clandestine operations to the post-war hideouts of Nazi criminals. Drawing on archival records, eyewitness testimonies, and recent scholarship, the author revisits cases that continue to fire the imagination: Rudolf Hess's secret flight to Britain, Heinrich Himmler's "shadow game" with the Allies, attempts at a separate peace, and the backstage decisions taken in the twilight of the Reich.

At its core, the book presents a gallery of Nazi criminals and regime insiders - Mengele, Reinefarth, von Alvensleben, Eichmann, Stangl, Rauff, Skorzeny, Degrelle and others - whose post-1945 trajectories expose the extent of post-war impunity, escape networks, and the silent protection offered by the Church, intelligence services, and Western governments. The author reconstructs the mechanisms of escape to South America, underground lives in Europe, and the later efforts of "Nazi hunters" such as Simon Wiesenthal and Beate and Serge Klarsfeld.

Drozdowski also dissects the darker symbols and myths: Werwolf and the supposed "Nazi underground", ODESSA, the "Alpine Fortress" legend, the German nuclear project and Wunderwaffe, Lebensborn as a "factory of the master race", the mystery of the last U-boats, Hitler's special train "Amerika/Brandenburg", and Operation Paperclip, through which American services recruited former Nazi scientists. He confronts these stories with the documentary record to show where thriller-like legend ends and hard history begins - and how the unresolved, distorted, or deliberately buried episodes of this past still burden our memory of the Second World War.
