Solera, Agustina Decolonial Conversations in Andean Patagonia
Learning from Dwelling Otherwise
  • Bloomsbury Academic, 2027
  • Hardcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9781350586307
  • Englisch
Drawing on four years living in the Mapuche territories of Andean Patagonia, Agustina Solera shows how decolonial and Indigenous approaches to development interact with one another in practice in this open access book.

Although decoloniality is a concept that has gained widespread usage in academic circles in the Global North, it is often employed without full engagement with the originating debates that questioned the stubborn persistence of Eurocentric colonial dynamics even in the postcolonial era. In this book, Solera summarizes those debates; shows how they speak to Indigenous, Andean-Patagonian knowledges and approaches to colonialism and development; and shows how Andean-Patagonian modes of "dwelling in the territory otherwise" themselves make important political gestures in ways under-recognized in contemporary decolonial thought. Ultimately, this leads to a uniquely situated exploration of the fundamental question that lies at the heart of any conversation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous approaches: How do you think from another place?

The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the Bloomsbury Open Collections Library Collective.

But not the way you know them: Machu Picchu was never lost. Families were still farming its terraces in 1911, when Hiram Bingham "discovered" the site for the West.

Checked, not copied.

Every number has been verified against accessible sources. Where sources disagree, you get the range instead of the prettier figure. Where a popular claim is wrong, the text says so - the widespread claim, for instance, that the Peruvian coat of arms shows a condor. It does not: what it shows is a vicuña, a cinchona tree, and a cornucopia.

With a country profile, timeline, glossary, and index for looking things up.

Useless knowledge can be many things. Wrong should not be one of them.

Dixie, Florence Quer durch Patagonien
Viktorianischer Reisebericht aus Südargentinien: Pampas, Tehuelche, Gauchos und weibliche Expeditionserfahrung
  • Copycat, 2025
  • Softcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9788028390280
  • Deutsch

Easter Island, isolated deep in the South Pacific and now a World Heritage Site, was home to a fascinating prehistoric culture-one that produced massive stone effigies (the moai) and the birdman cult-and yet much of the island's past remains shrouded in mystery. Where did the islanders come from, and when? How did Rapa Nui culture evolve over the centuries? How, and why, did their natural environment change over time?Paul Bahn and John Flenley guide readers through the mysteries and enigmas of Rapa Nui, incorporating the records of early explorers, folk legends, and archaeological evidence along the way. They cover the island's geological and environmental history and explore its flora and fauna, illustrating how human actions affected the natural environment of the island. This fourth edition draws in: recent DNA studies of ancient human and animal bones as well as plant remains; evolving understandings of how the moai were transported; and current efforts to reforest the island.

Contemporary Afro-Brazil: A Multidisciplinary Anthology exposes students to all aspects of Afro-Brazilian culture, including sports, music and dance, ideas of gender, socioeconomic and political disparities, and more. The anthology includes primary and secondary sources that emphasize and demonstrate the African influence in Brazilian culture from the beginning of the Atlantic Slave Trade to today. Over the course of 10 modules, students learn about the "discovery" of Brazil by the Portuguese, the establishment of the Atlantic Slave Trade, the existence (or not) of a racial democracy in Brazil, and how African traditions are often interwoven with Catholicism to create a unique religious practice and tradition. Additional readings explore the African influence on Brazilian dance, music, and film, the development and policing of favelas, and gender inequality in the nation. The collection closes with sections dedicated to the Afro-Brazilian influence on soccer and modern-day politics, protest, and policy, as Afro-Brazilians struggle to overcome socioeconomic, racial, and political disparities. Contemporary Afro-Brazil is a cross-disciplinary anthology designed to serve as a supplementary text for foundational courses in anthropology, history, political science, sociology, music, dance, religion, and gender studies that focus on Latin America and Brazil.Bonnie S. "Exploration Fawcett" is the gripping firsthand account of one of the most legendary figures in the history of South American exploration. Compiled from the journals and letters of Lieutenant-Colonel P.H. Fawcett, this work chronicles his perilous journeys through the dense, uncharted jungles of the Amazon basin. Fawcett's observations on the geography, ethnography, and natural history of the region offer invaluable insights into a landscape that remained largely a mystery to the Western world at the turn of the 20th century. Beyond the technical aspects of mapping and surveying, the book captures the spirit of adventure and the psychological toll of the wilderness.
