Kerr, Carolyn An Argentine in my Kitchen
How I followed my heart to Buenos Aires
  • Carolyn Kerr, 2019
  • Softcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9780648577607
  • Englisch
Catherine falls for Pedro, who is Argentine, when her boat capsizes in Sydney harbour. Then she falls for his cooking. And then she finds herself in Buenos Aires. Unable to speak fluent Spanish, let alone understand rapid-fire conversations, she is disoriented in a high-rise city of thirteen million inhabitants, where the subway runs on the left, but cars drive on the right. The custom of kissing people when they are first introduced - but not always, and not everyone - adds to her confusion. And Pedro's family displays an overwhelming interest in everything that Catherine and Pedro do.Funny, intimate and engaging, Catherine's story unfolds against the backdrop of Buenos Aires streetscapes, Argentine customs, family life, food and wine. The narrative is peppered with Argentine sayings and expressions - with their English translations - and each chapter ends with one of Pedro's tantalising recipes.Catherine's story is written in the form of a travel memoir and covers a period of six months. During this time, Catherine experiences emotional highs and lows in a new country, and learns what is important to her, to her husband, and to their relationship. This entertaining, easy-to-read story speeds along with a good dose of humour. The action takes place near to, and often within, the Buenos Aires tourist areas of Palermo, Recoleta and San Telmo. The book will appeal to travellers, Latin American cooking enthusiasts, students of Spanish, and those who plan to move to Argentina as expats. For those visiting Buenos Aires, this book will complement any travel guidebook for Argentina, Patagonia, or South America.

"White Waters and Black" is a classic and irreverent account of a scientific expedition through the Amazon basin during the early 1920s. Written by Gordon MacCreagh, the narrative follows a team of eight men as they attempt to cross the continent from the high Andes of Bolivia to the Atlantic coast of Brazil. Unlike the often-stuffy exploration journals of its time, this work is celebrated for its wit, honesty, and cynical humor regarding the realities of jungle travel.MacCreagh captures the grueling nature of the journey, detailing the constant battles with insects, the treacherous navigation of white-water rapids, and the inevitable frictions that arise when a diverse group of personalities is confined to the wilderness. Beyond the adventure, "White Waters and Black" offers fascinating observations on the indigenous peoples of the Rio Negro and the Upper Amazon, providing a valuable anthropological snapshot of a region then largely unknown to the Western world. This work remains a cornerstone of travel literature, praised for its unvarnished look at the triumphs and follies of early 20th-century exploration. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. The Essential Guide to Customs & Culture
  • Kuperard, 2018
  • Softcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9781857338737
  • Englisch
Chile is a land of contrast and surprise, flanked by the Pacific Ocean on the west, the Andes to the east, the forbidding salt basins of the Atacama Desert to the north--with a verdant Central Valley and Cape Horn at its southern extremity. The Chilean people, too, are surprising: on one hand reserved, family-oriented, Catholic, and conservative; and on the other fun-loving, entrepreneurial, neoliberal, and modern. Their geographical isolation from the rest of the world, their colonial past, and the near 20years of repression under the military dictatorship of General Pinochet have had a profound influence on their character. Today, traditional Chilean values are being questioned by the younger generation. In fact, the country's position as the Latin American stronghold of Catholicism is being challenged by Chileans of all generations, and pressure has led to unprecedented changes in family and censorship law. Chile is also one of the fastest-growing economies in South America, and thanks to ambitious structural reforms, has sharply reduced its poverty rate in the past few years. Culture Smart! Chile provides vital information on what to expect and how to behave in this complex and dynamic society.

Dixie, Florence, Lady Across Patagonia
A Victorian Woman Explorer's Journey Through the Argentine Pampas and Tehuelche Frontier
  • e-artnow, 2023
  • Softcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9788027378173
  • Englisch
Across Patagonia (1880) records Lady Florence Dixie's 1878-79 expedition through the southern plains of Argentina, a region then still imagined by many Europeans as remote, perilous, and scarcely mapped. Blending travel narrative, sporting memoir, and ethnographic observation, Dixie writes in a vigorous Victorian prose marked by lyric descriptions of wind-swept pampas, sharply paced hunting scenes, and encounters with Tehuelche communities. The book belongs to the great nineteenth-century tradition of exploratory writing, yet its female authorship gives its adventure, authority, and self-fashioning a distinctive force. Dixie herself was an aristocratic nonconformist: a Scottish-born noblewoman, traveler, journalist, war correspondent, and later an outspoken advocate of women's rights. Her appetite for physical risk and resistance to conventional domestic roles clearly shaped the journey and the narrative. Patagonia offered her not merely exotic scenery, but a stage on which to test courage, independence, and observational competence against masculine imperial assumptions. This book is recommended to readers interested in Victorian travel literature, women explorers, South American landscapes, and the cultural history of adventure. It remains compelling as both document and performance: a bold account of place, identity, and freedom.

"The Sea & the Jungle" is a landmark work of travel literature that captures H. M. Tomlinson's transformative journey from the industrial docks of Swansea to the heart of the Amazon rainforest. Serving as a narrative of the voyage of the tramp steamer Capella, the work details an arduous expedition across the Atlantic and deep into the Brazilian interior, following the Amazon and Madeira rivers to the San Antonio Falls.Tomlinson's prose blends vivid maritime observation with a philosophical contemplation of the natural world. As the steamer navigates the dense, oppressive beauty of the jungle, the author explores the tension between human industry and the primordial power of the wilderness. The narrative is celebrated for its atmospheric descriptions, capturing the sounds, scents, and textures of both the open sea and the tropical undergrowth. Unlike standard travelogues of its era, "The Sea & the Jungle" offers a deeply personal reflection on escape, discovery, and the isolation of the modern soul amidst the overwhelming scale of nature. This work remains a masterpiece of early 20th-century prose and a testament to the enduring allure of the unexplored world. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. "Idle Days in Patagonia" is a masterwork of nature writing and travel literature by the renowned naturalist and author W. H. Hudson. Born of a period of forced convalescence following a hunting accident, the book transcends the traditional travelogue to offer a deeply meditative exploration of the Patagonian wilderness. Hudson's prose captures the stark, haunting beauty of the Argentine landscape, from its vast, windswept plains to the intricate lives of its native flora and fauna.Throughout the narrative, Hudson reflects on the relationship between humanity and the natural world, blending scientific observation with poetic insight. His encounters with the region's birds, mammals, and indigenous history are recounted with a clarity and sensitivity that remain influential in the genre of environmental literature. Rather than a mere chronological record of travel, the work serves as an evocative study of solitude, perception, and the enduring power of the wild. "Idle Days in Patagonia" remains an essential read for those captivated by the intersections of natural history and literary memoir, providing a timeless window into one of the world's most remote and fascinating regions. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. The Enigmas of Rapa Nui

  • 4th edition
Easter Island, isolated deep in the South Pacific and now a World Heritage Site, was home to a fascinating prehistoric culture-one that produced massive stone effigies (the moai) and the birdman cult-and yet much of the island's past remains shrouded in mystery. Where did the islanders come from, and when? How did Rapa Nui culture evolve over the centuries? How, and why, did their natural environment change over time?Paul Bahn and John Flenley guide readers through the mysteries and enigmas of Rapa Nui, incorporating the records of early explorers, folk legends, and archaeological evidence along the way. They cover the island's geological and environmental history and explore its flora and fauna, illustrating how human actions affected the natural environment of the island. This fourth edition draws in: recent DNA studies of ancient human and animal bones as well as plant remains; evolving understandings of how the moai were transported; and current efforts to reforest the island.
