Body and Medicine in Latin Poetry

  • Trends in Classics - Supplementary Volumes 183

While intersections between Greek literature and medicine have become a focal point of considerable research among Classicists in the last ten years, little work has been done in the field of Latin literature, with particular regard to poetry. And yet the human body and its affections have pride of place in numerous poems from ancient Rome, the medical in uence of which can hardly be denied.

By building on the recent developments in the field of medical humanities, this volume aims at tackling innovatively the intersections between medical sciences and Latin literary texts, with papers exploring the ways in which medicine is integrated into poetry and how poetry, in turn, can propagate medical knowledge across various social classes and cultural contexts.

This volume will uncover the connections between Roman literature and ancient theories of the body, thus showing how indebted Roman poetic production was to both ancient Greek and Roman medical traditions. As such, it will be of significant interest for researchers and postgraduate students working on ancient Greek and Roman medicine and philosophy, Roman poetry and literature more broadly, ancient senses and emotions, and medical humanities.

'Versus ad picturas' - Text/Image Relation in Greek, Latin and Arabic Poetry
Band 115
From Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages
  • De Gruyter, 2026
  • Hardcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9783119146272
  • Englisch|Französisch
  • Millennium-Studien / Millennium Studies 115

Over the last 30 years, many books, conferences and volumes have been devoted to the relationship between text and image in the Late Antiquity and in the Middle Ages. But there has been little space for poetic texts, which, in addition to the direct or mediated message, also demand the attention of the analyst through the impact of the intertext of the entire Latin poetic tradition, multiplying the levels of meaning and therefore the possibilities of interpretation. In relation to the recognition of the need to consider texts (mental or written) as sources of inspiration for images, we are now in a position to take a further step by applying to medieval culture the concept of iconotext developed by Liliane Louvel (2018) for modern literature. In this vein, the Versus ad picturas conference therefore aims to contribute to the study of the relationship between the images we now call artistic, painted on walls, fabrics, stained glass or parchments, and the verses that often accompany them materially or ideally, and which are now increasingly recognised as essential to their cultural understanding and social framing, in the hope of bringing us closer to the meaning hidden in their combination and the meaning perceived by the commissioners, executors and viewers of the time.

Sullivan, Christopher Lincoln's Poetry
The Creative Life of a Leader
  • University of Illinois Press, 2026
  • Hardcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9780252049927
  • Englisch
Drawn to poetry throughout his life, Abraham Lincoln read verse for comfort and pleasure, used it in his writings and speeches, and looked to it for insights into spiritual matters and politics, and spontaneously recited it in dark moments to lift his spirits.

Christopher Sullivan's engaging exploration focuses on the role of poetry in Lincoln's life and thought. As Sullivan shows, the poetic prose of Lincoln's most famous writings and oratory drew on an ear for verse he began to cultivate during his frontier youth. Full versions of Lincoln's own published and unpublished poetry provide fascinating context for his work before and during his political career while shedding light on his state of mind during the crisis of an existential war. Sullivan also considers Lincoln's relationship with poetry against a backdrop of what poetry is, how it operates, and how it may resurface in prose.

A journalistic look at the crossroads of art and leadership, Lincoln's Poetry adds a surprising yet vital dimension to our perceptions of the sixteenth president.

Poetry & Sketches is a hauntingly intimate collection that drifts between shadow and softness, where gothic romance meets quiet observation. Each poem is delicately woven with imagery of lace, candlelight, and whispered longing...Drawing inspiration from dimly lit streets, antique elegance, and the fragile tension between beauty and melancholy...These pieces explore love in its most ethereal forms: fleeting, mysterious, and sometimes tinged with darkness... Alongside the verses, the 'sketches' capture emotional impressions... moments, moods, and silhouettes... like ink on paper or memory half-remembered...Romantic yet unsettling, graceful yet raw, Poetry & Sketches invites readers into a world where silk and shadows intertwine, and every line feels like a secret just waiting to be uncovered...

  • Poetry in the Digital Age 8

The speech technologies of the digital age make everything speak - from voice assistants and GPS navigators to streaming media. The dissociation of voice and speech from the speaker and the situation of speaking engendered by this condition imbues the ages-old question of lyric theory "Who speaks?" with renewed salience. This book investigates digital oral poetry - an artform that explores the modes of oral speech facilitated and conditioned by digital technologies and digital culture, foregrounding the selves that are performed and constructed in the speaking act. Practices of digital oral poetry run across the boundaries between institutionally recognised forms of art and poetry, pop culture and participatory culture online. They may include poetry performed in synthesised or deep-faked voices, AI-generated performance poetry, intersections of poetry and ASMR videos or audioliterary memes such as Autotune stories to name a few examples. Through a series of case studies, the book offers a (post-)phenomenological examination of the contemporary digitally-inflected forms of subjectivity as they manifest in digital oral poetry.

Visions and Echoes

  • Among the Victorians and Modernists
Rilke's Early Poetry investigates the process of creative labor in Rilke's earlier poetic works. Using themes that are present in The Book of Hours, The Book of Images, and Eleven Visions, Nicholas Reynolds shows Rilke's underlying theory of creative labor, which requires the artist to uncover the unconscious, i.e. the self beyond conceptualization. Each chapter highlights a central gesture in Rilke's works. Through a careful analysis of gestures, language, and the interplay of identities, Reynolds illuminates the ways in which Rilke's poetry navigates the complexities of existence, offering readers a path to understanding and potentially transcending the challenges of modern life. This book provides rigorous insights to appeal to academics, researchers and graduate students within literary studies and continental philosophy, and more specifically German poetry, modernist poetry, or Rilke himself.

  • Points of View
A short, critical text by poet Yves Bonnefoy on the fraught relationship between poetry and photography, masterfully translated by Chris Turner. The international community of letters mourns the recent death of Yves Bonnefoy, universally acclaimed as one of France's greatest poets of the last half-century. A prolific author, he was often considered a top candidate for the Nobel Prize and published a dozen major collections of poetry in verse and prose, several books of dreamlike tales, and numerous studies of literature and art. <BR>>Bonnefoy's compact essay focuses on one of the disturbing effects of the earliest photographs: their introduction of a notion of non-being--if not, indeed, nothingness--into the world of images. But it also foregrounds a tale which seems to have picked up figuratively on this effect and examined its dangers with a sense of horror: Guy de Maupassant's extraordinary short story "The Night," one of the nightmarish works of his last period of conscious creation.

  • Contemp North American Poetry
In the early decades of the postwar period, the planetary metaphor of "spaceship Earth" was everywhere in the West. It exerted its power on sites as various as Caribbean research stations, the shipping lanes of the U.S.-occupied Pacific, Palestinian refugee camps, and the internal colonies of segregated nations. At its heart was a new ideology and infrastructure of managing, administering, and rationalizing nature through which Western powers sought to maintain their grip on a decolonizing planet.

Poetry from Spaceship Earth retrieves a diverse array of postwar American poets--Robert Duncan, June Jordan, Joanne Kyger, Lorine Niedecker, and Charles Olson--who contested and cultivated alternatives to this emergent mode of environmentalism. By placing the major innovations of postwar poetry into conversation with environmental politics, Cold War science and technology studies, and postcolonial and Black studies, Samia Rahimtoola develops an original theoretical and historical account of the racial and colonial logics that underpin the supposedly neutral project of managing nature. <BR>

"First Rain Poetry" describes the intense hope of finally feeling refreshing and healing water after a long period of deprivation. This poetic healing springs from a lyrical biotope. In the silence of the soul, many poems whisper; these words long to dance, filled with love and pain. In Lahya's writing, one can sense a delicate tapestry of quietly floating letters and thoughts. But not for long. They want to break free, to empower themselves and unfold on the page. Lahya invites you on a poetic journey, a journey between pages, lines, and words. Lahya's wish: may the words merge with deprivations, emotions, the rightful place in society, and the need for active engagement. This poetry collection calls for a raw, honest self-dialogue and lovingly encourages the reader to become self-aware and ask questions.

Moe, Lukas Poetry Makes You Happen
American Poetry from Modernism to the Social Movement
  • The University of North Carolina Press, 2026
  • Hardcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9781469694009
  • Englisch
Modernist poetry has long had a reputation for craft formalism and political conservatism that overshadows its radical legacies. Lukas Moe shows how midcentury US poets and poetics drew upon leftwing culture to pave the way for diversity and pluralism in contemporary poetry. Poets used modernist forms to write poems of individual dissent and systemic critique that resonated with the ambitious visions of social movements in postwar US society. Audre Lorde’s sense that poetry “makes you happen”—a remix of W. H. Auden’s old saw that ”poetry makes nothing happen"—exemplifies the power of what Moe calls verse culture: the archives, networks, and print media that sustain individual poetic creation and collective imagination.

By resituating authors such as Sterling A. Brown, Robert Hayden, George Oppen, Lorine Niedecker, and Muriel Rukeyser into a fluid political network of commitment and dissent, Moe narrates a compelling literary political history that deepens our understanding of what poetry can do in difficult times.

  • Modern and Contemporary Poetry and Poetics

Recent news images of disastrous floods, fires and earthquakes vividly show we live in an unstable world. This book examines that precarity through an analysis of how disaster is expressed through poetry. It situates poetry of disaster as a distinct poetic endeavour and as an emerging field of academic research. Focusing on a selection of twentieth and twenty-first century poetry collections responding to notable disasters, these collections are explored firstly, as literary texts; secondly, as case studies into why and how the authors chose to write about these disasters in the way they did; and thirdly, as access points for wider investigations into disaster and disaster studies in the twentieth and twenty-first century. The texts also inform an exploration into the binary of man-made and natural , a binary that stubbornly persists in contemporary representations of disaster, however problematic that differentiation is in this age of the Anthropocene.

Ye, Song Poetry and Power of Judgment
The Aesthetic Unity of Chinese Classical Poetry
  • Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2026
  • Softcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9781032785738
  • Englisch
This book examines Chinese traditional poetry with an emphasis on the sources of pleasure in creating and appreciating classical Chinese poems and the basis for valid aesthetic judgments about poetry. The pleasure derived from art plays a crucial role in people's evaluation of its worth. This book shows that Chinese classical poetics and Western aesthetics agree on the sources of aesthetic pleasure. Both hold, despite their obvious differences, that aesthetic taste essentially involves cognition. The book explores important ideas in traditional Chinese poetry, emphasizing that "Poetry is founded upon the power of judgement (shi)." This central idea guides other key concepts throughout the history of Chinese poetics, revealing the fundamental principles of creating and appreciating poetic art. The author presents new views of traditional Chinese poetry and poetics by unifying these long-dispersed basic propositions into a new coherent cognitivist framework that also gives due importance to emotion.Scholars and students studying Chinese literature, poetics, philosophy of art, and philosophy of mind will find this book interesting.

Poetry and Emergent Worlds explores how some of the most innovative strategies, forms and themes in postwar American poetry are concerned with ideas of the child and with childishness. The book offers a survey of the relationship between poetry, childhood and sexuality in a range of 20th and 21st-century American poets. Drawing upon the latest perspectives from psychoanalytic and queer theories of the child, the book demonstrates the extent to which the child stands as a central figure in our thinking about American culture and to its poetic traditions in particular.

The book examines work by a range of postwar American poets, from Elizabeth Bishop, John Ashbery, James Schuyler and Joe Brainard to Claudia Rankine, micha cárdenas and Andrea Brady.

A conversational, nerdy, funny, and sexy contribution to the history of feminist and lesbian movements and the practice and criticism of poetry.Conversational, nerdy, funny, and sexy, How Lesbians Saved Poetry asks: "Why are so many of our great feminist and queer studies icons poets?" Incorporating personal narrative, literary analysis, craft essays, poems, graphics, and interviews, Lisa L. Moore describes the significance of lesbian poets in the formation of contemporary poetry as well as feminist and queer studies and activism. In a multimethod style that is conversational, wry, and candid, the book explores notable debates such as the feminist sex wars, the politics of the sonnet, and poetic traditons of critiquing racist violence. The book also includes priceless interviews with poets Samiya Bashir, Chrystos, Cheryl Clarke, Judy Grahn, Minnie Bruce Pratt, and Eileen Myles. How Lesbians Saved Poetry is a timeless and necessary contribution to the history of feminist and lesbian movements and the practice and criticism of poetry.

An authoritative collection of Valéry's important essays on poetry

This volume collects all of Paul Valéry's major meditations on the theory and practice of poetry. These pieces range from his first essay, "On Literary Technique" (1889), to his last, "Variations on the Eclogues" (1944). Among them are essays on his own work and that of other poets, on "pure poetry," on the speaking of verse, and on the art of translation. In these pieces, Valéry focuses on the deliberate formal work of poetry--in his own poems as well as in those of La Fontaine, Victor Hugo, Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Rimbaud, and others.

The Collected Works of Paul Valéry, the first collected edition of the writer in English, features new translations, the original French on facing pages for poetic works, and editorial notes.

Greenlaw, Lavinia On Difficulty (and Poetry)
  • Faber & Faber, 2026

  • Englisch
A book that uses poetry to talk about difficulty, and vice versaAs Lavinia Greenlaw readily admits, 'The idea of poetry tends to make people feel stupid, anxious or bored.' Poetry can appear to be inherently 'difficult'; our immediate impulse, to baulk or turn away. But in this wonderfully lucid investigation, Greenlaw invites us to do the opposite: to dwell with her in the uneasiness of difficulty. She looks at why we might both crave and fear difficulty, how we use and perform it, how our relationship to it might expose habits of thought and approach that can be productively dismantled. By entertaining the possibility of difficulty, she argues, we might allow ourselves to get more truthfully at what it is we really need to say. With characteristic poise and clarity, and using plentiful examples, Greenlaw turns over moments of opacity and resistance to show us how difficulty might in fact contain its own solution.

Marsh, Alec Adrienne Rich's Later Poetry
Raya Dunayevskaya and Marxist-Humanism
  • Bloomsbury Academic, 2026
  • Softcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9781350467019
  • Englisch
Reorienting understandings of Adrienne Rich's later work through her interest in Marx and Marxist politics, this book engages with this overlooked part of her oeuvre through considerations of issues such as race, nationhood, and gender. <BR><BR>From 1983 onward, after she visited revolutionary Nicaragua until the end of her life, Rich's political vision can best be described as Marxist-Humanist. Until recently, very little attention has been paid to Rich's "interest" in Marx; there is no in-depth treatment of the effect of Marx's humanistic philosophy on Rich's later work, or even on her unwavering, but altered dedication to Women's Liberation. This book fills this gap, showing how Rich's discovery of Marx's humanism affected her poetry. In doing so, it makes a significant intervention into debates about the direction of American poetics and argues powerfully for a greater consciousness of political engagement through poetry.

  • Softcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9798765125021

The Emprise of Poetry analyzes the insidious entwinement of anti-Americanism and antisemitism in modern and contemporary German culture through the writings of one of its most acclaimed literary figures: Dresden native Durs Grünbein (1962-).<BR><BR>Michael Eskin offers an unprecedented view of the American-cum-Jewish discontents at the heart of modern and present-day German culture through the exemplary lens of the work of Durs Grünbein, the most widely translated and globally honored living German poet, and the only one to have been hailed as the Berlin Republic's "most qualified contemporary candidate for the office of German national poet."<BR><BR>Yet as Eskin outlines, Grünbein's work contains a paradoxical and tension-filled twofold self-construction: as an idiosyncratically 'American' poet and Ezra Pound's vociferously philosemitic heir, who merely happens to be writing in German, as it were, conjoined with an avidly anti-American German poet who writes emphatically, and not always savorily, as a German and a self-proclaimed heir to the legacies of Celan and Kafka - most notably, on matters American and Jewish. Against the foil of these tensions, Eskin traces and documents postwar German high culture's persisting inability to purge itself of ideological toxins that leach into the mainstream from centuries-old prejudices and antagonisms revolving around Germany's love-hate bond with America as well as its ostensibly enduring suspicion and antipathy toward Jews.<BR><BR> Eskin's deep dive into the 'American' Grünbein's apparent philosemitism coupled with the German Grünbein's antisemitically-inflected anti-Americanism reveals the fault lines underlying the complex and contradictory legacies and contexts of postwar German culture.

Spanning two World Wars, three nations and two continents this book traces the relationships and considers the representation of the events and experiences of these conflicts by four women poets; Winifred Letts, Lola Ridge, H.D. and Sheila Wingfield. <BR><BR>Adopting a comparative approach to these writers, this book examines how they endeavoured to make poetic sense of the unfolding narrative of the two wars, each writing while the fighting was underway. Spanning two wars and two continents it traces the relationships between the lives and wartime poetry of these four women writers, none of whom easily fits into the worlds they occupied. Adopting a transnational approach this book examines the ways in which these writers create a literary space of mutual understanding and shared concern in their responses to the trauma, violence and upheaval of a world at war.

  • Modern and Contemporary Poetry and Poetics

This open access volume addresses the vital role of the live event in British spoken word poetry of the past fifty years. It starts from the premise that meaning in poetry performance is radically conditioned by the performance s spatio-temporal situatedness and its specific forms of mediation: meaning emerges at the interface of text, voice action, body communication, the poet s projected stage identity, and is shaped by the unique and emergent dynamic between the poet-performer, audience, technology, and performance context. Through performance analyses that are informed by archival work and original interviews with practitioners, the book sheds new light on the dynamic and varied relationships between tradition, innovation, and mediation in British spoken word poetry. It attends to the performance work of canonical, emergent, and re-discovered figures from a range of stylistic, geographical, ethnic and socio-political constituents within the UK, exploring both avant-garde and popular forms of performed poetries.

By carefully relating individual performances to their specific event contexts, the volume sounds out the varied ways in which poets have creatively engaged with both literary and performance traditions as well as with media technologies. In the process, it addresses a number of key developments in UK poetry performance and underscores the transnational dimensions of British spoken word. In its entirety, the volume thus makes a pivotal contribution to the history of British poetry performance whilst also developing a critical lens through which to approach the poetry event.

Through short essays, leading poetry critics and Bob Dylan experts analyze songs from a range of perspectives to illuminate the songs' poetic and literary character.<BR><BR>An innovative resource for Bob Dylan fans and scholars alike, these thirty essays by leading scholars of poetry, music, and literature illustrate how and why the work of the 2016 Nobel Literature Laureate is in fact so literary. Examining how Dylan's lyrics shape or get shaped by vocalization, performance, instrumentation, film, recording technologies, and the forces of history unfolding around him, this collection models a range of ways to understand the songs as poetical phenomena by answering questions like: How can we read and understand Dylan's lyrics as poetry? How do those lyrics build on, dialogue with, and expand the poetic tradition? How does Dylan's style change over time while both pushing and responding to changes in the world of popular music? Collecting archival research, close reading, musical analysis, and various modes of cultural criticism under one cover, The Poetry of Bob Dylan: Thirty Essays on Thirty Songs stakes a claim to Dylan's central place in the history of American poetry.

This book explores metonymic patterns in Li Bai's poetry from a cognitive poetic perspective and offers new insights into the use of metonymies in poetry more widely. Focusing more specifically on Annotations to the Annals of the Complete Collection of Li Bai compiled by A Qi, it sheds light on the poetic style of one of the most celebrated poets of China's Tang Dynasty (610-907 AD).<BR><BR>Adopting corpus-based and introspection methods, this book builds a metonymy identification procedure that takes into account the social and cultural context and the stylistic characteristics of Tang poetry, classifies the metonymies into different categories, and examines their roles and functions. The author reveals how Li Bai's metonymies reflect the poet's evolution as his style shifts from romanticism to realism. She also reflects on how they act as a lens through which readers can learn about hierarchical structures, wine, dress and agriculture in the Tang Dynasty. <BR><BR>Approaching Li Bai's poetry from a fresh angle, this volume contributes to the study of classical Chinese literature and offers implications for the appreciation, translation and teaching of Li Bai's poetry.

  • Englisch
Poetry & Painting Bound by Beauty is a major volume in the poetry-and-painting series by Chinese American artist Chen Huiying (Victoria Chen), centered on the theme of beauty. Building upon her earlier works, this collection further refines the integration of visual art and poetic expression, incorporating the unique "olive poem" structure to create rhythm, harmony, and emotional resonance. The book explores the beauty of nature and everyday life through flowers, changing seasons, birds, animals, and quiet moments of observation. From the unfolding of a leaf to the bloom of a flower, and from fleeting emotions to reflections on time, each piece transforms ordinary experiences into poetic imagery and visual contemplation. In this volume, beauty is not presented as something distant or grand, but as something deeply rooted in daily life. Through the dialogue between painting and poetry, readers are invited to rediscover calmness, warmth, and joy within ordinary moments.Living in the United States for many years, Chen Huiying has gradually developed a distinctive artistic practice centered on the fusion of poetry and painting. Rooted in Eastern aesthetics, her work blends personal reflection, emotional sensitivity, and observations of nature into an artistic language that is gentle, meditative, and deeply human.Presented in both Chinese and English, the book allows Eastern aesthetic sensibilities to resonate naturally across cultures. More than an art collection, Poetry & Painting Bound by Beauty is an invitation to see beauty, understand beauty, and live alongside it in everyday life.¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿Victoria Chen¿"¿¿¿¿"¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿"¿"¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿"¿¿¿"¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿"¿"¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿"¿¿¿¿"¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿--¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿

Beginning in late 2023, she started literary writing in earnest and has since written more than 700 poems.By the end of 2025, she completed seven collections in her poetry-and-painting series, including Poetry & Painting Bound by Affection, Poetry & Painting Bound by Dreams, Poetry & Painting Bound by Fate, Poetry & Painting Bound by Beauty, Poetry & Painting Bound by Love, Poetry & Art From a Wise Heart I, and Poetry & Art From a Wise Heart II. Together, these works form a unique artistic body that blends Eastern aesthetics with a global cultural perspective, rooted in sincerity, emotional depth, and reflections on life and nature.¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿·¿¿1950¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿2014¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿"¿¿¿¿"¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿2023¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿

Hena, Omaar British Black and Asian Poetry
Race, Aesthetics and Politics 1970-2023
  • Cambridge University Press, 2026
  • Hardcover
  • ISBN/EAN: 9781009712392
  • Englisch
This book examines a wide sweep of prominent Black and Asian British poets, from Linton Kwesi Johnson and Jean 'Binta' Breeze through David Dabydeen, Bernardine Evaristo, and Jason Allen-Paisant. Throughout, Omaar Hena demonstrates how these poets engage with urgent crises surrounding race and social inequality over the past fifty years, spanning policing and racial violence in the 1970s and 1980s, through poetry's cultural recognition in the 1990s and 2000s by museums, the 2012 London Olympics, the publishing scene, and awards and prizes, as well as continuing social realities of riots and uprisings. In dub poetry, dramatic monologues, ekphrasis, and lyric, Hena argues that British Black and Asian poets perform racial politics in conditions of spiraling crisis. Engaged and insightful, this book argues that poetry remains a vital art form in twenty-first-century global Britain. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.

Chen, Victoria Hui Ying Poetry & Painting Bound by Dreams

  • Englisch
Poetry & Painting Bound by Dreams is a bilingual collection of art and poetic reflections created by Chinese American artist Chen Huiying (Victoria Chen). Centered on the theme of dreams, the book features paintings and writings she has developed since 2014, exploring nature, memory, and moments of everyday life. From the introspective voice of I Have a Dream to the nostalgic atmosphere of The Wheat Field at Sunset and the emotional resonance of Holding Hands, the collection creates a flowing artistic dialogue between reality and imagination. In these works, painting becomes an extension of emotion and memory, while words serve as echoes of the inner self. With warmth, sincerity, and poetic sensitivity, the artist blends personal experience, cultural memory, and reflections on nature into a unified artistic language in which each image and text carries a sense of time, feeling, and quiet contemplation.Living in the United States for many years, Chen Huiying has gradually developed a distinctive creative approach centered on the integration of poetry and painting. Rooted in Eastern aesthetics, her work combines lyrical expression, color, and emotional reflection to create an artistic world that is both tranquil and deeply human.Presented in both Chinese and English, the book allows Eastern poetic sensibility to resonate naturally across cultures. It speaks not only to art lovers, but also to readers seeking reflection, emotional connection, and inner calm.More than an art book, Poetry & Painting Bound by Dreams is a quiet meditation on dreams, memory, and life itself-an invitation to pause, reflect, and rediscover the beauty within both reality and imagination.¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿Victoria Chen¿¿¿¿¿¿¿"¿"¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿2014¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿"¿¿¿¿"¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿
