The fantasy genre is one of the richest and most multifaceted of all cinematic genres. It possesses a unique and fundamental characteristic that is, by definition, inherent to it: its relationship to reality. Fantasy creates a disconnect from our reality, and cinema has become one of the most fervent illustrators of this device. Every nation has had its own era of cinema rich in fantasy, each with its own distinct characteristics and unique approach to a specific conception of the genre. French fantasy cinema, unlike many others, did not have a golden age, but rather implicitly enriched the art of cinema as a whole through landmark works that have marked the history of cinema. Thus, it never coalesced into a fantasy movement with precise and identifiable codes, but distinguished itself through its powerful subtlety and its desire to transcend the realm of fantasy. The practical section of this thesis focused on illustrating the phenomenon of repetition in fantasy cinema through a trilogy that embodies the rules and imperatives required by this particular stylistic device.
