From antiquity into modern times, the Roman comic playwright Terence has been considered a classic of Latin literature. Above all, he was valued for his elegant and exemplary language, making him ideal for use in schools. This study traces the reception of Terence in antiquity until the 3rd century, examining the critical assessments that helped establish the poet's classical reputation against the backdrop of the formation of the Roman canon.
